Operation
Wallacea

Operation Wallacea is an
organisation funded by tuition fees
received by volunteers, like myself, who venture out to one of the 9
remote
expedition sites across the world to assist with the research on site.
Each
expedition is conservation centred, aiming to both identify areas in
need of
protection and also access current conservation management programmes.
A
variety of long-term large scale surveys are taken at each site,
collecting
data that helps determine the best course of conservation to maximise
the
success for species with those ecosystems. The surveys result in a
large number
of publications each year and have led to 30 discoveries of new
vertebrate
species as well as the rediscovery of 4 ‘extinct’ species.
